Ideas

From January to March 2010, we ran a call for ideas to find great new ideas to slow down and stop the cycle of youth offending using simple web and mobile tools.

A grand total of 50 very early stage ideas were submitted to Jailbrake and we chose just six that we saw the greatest potential to build at the Jailbrake weekend, 26th-28th March 2010.

We invited a whole range of people who we thought had the skills and knowledge to come along – from young people and members of youth offending teams to software developers and designers.

Their challenge was to take our six Jailbraking ideas and make them into prototype projects – complete with working software – it less than 48 hours.

And here’s what they built:

Nudge Me

Nudge Me is a text-based reminder service for young people on supervision orders to help them keep track of where they’re meant to be, when – complete with a demo tested on our Jailbrake judges at the end of the weekend.

Take a look at their Show and Tell presentation for a full explanation of their idea:

Nudge Me

Nudge Me started out life as MyPA.

Spill

Spill is a phone-based peer-to-peer mentoring system built using Ribbit for young people who are at risk of getting caught up in the criminal justice system. The team built an impressive working prototype of the phone system over the weekend.

Spill started out life as Phone a friend.

Take a look at their Show and Tell presentation to see what they created over the weekend:

80808

A mobile-based service providing young people at risk directly with crisis information they need about relevant local services such as accommodation or health care – and with a working demo tested live on the Show and Tell audience.

You can see their presentation for all the details of what they built:

80808 started out life as Lost and Found.

Common Ground

Safe Ground is a platform to support a facilitated discussion process between victim and offender. Their presentation will be added here shortly.

Safe Ground started out as Common Ground.

MyFirstWeek

MyFirstWeek this is a tool for helping match young offenders as they leave custody directly with housing providers with available accommodation.

MyFirstWeek started out as Service Signposter. And here’s their Show and Tell presentation:

FLIP

FLIP is a Facebook app for young people to tell their friends what their skills and talents are, which can be turned into a professional CV linking into job support.

Check out their Show and Tell presentation for further details of what they built at the Jailbrake weekend:

You can read the original idea behind FLIP here.

And you can see some of the screen shots of project demos and wire frames on our Flickr page.

But it doesn’t end here.

We hope the Jailbrake weekend is just the beginning for these ideas and we’ll be following up with each team to help them work out what to do next.
